Are you interested in how drought risk of rural communities in East Africa is related to climate and societal drivers? Then we would like to get to know you. Please apply at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

Application Deadline: 25th June 2020.

About the Award: We are happy to announce that at IVM – VU Amsterdam we have 2 PhD vacancies related to the new EU-funded DOWN2EARTH project. DOWN2EARTH project will assess critical research gaps within the dryland regions of the Horn of Africa (HAD), including i) how climate change affects the characteristics of rainfall and groundwater storage, ii) how the evolution of hydrological processes will impact the people who depend on them, and (iii) how communities can best adapt to drought risk.

An international team of researchers and organisations, including Jeroen Aerts and his team, has been awarded over €6.7m from EU Horizon 2020 to help tackle food and water insecurity in the Horn of Africa Drylands (HAD). The project aims to help rural East African communities adapt to climate change using state-of-the-art predictions of water scarcity and food insecurity.
